Hoya plants, also known as wax plants, are popular houseplants appreciated for their beautiful foliage and unique, waxy flowers. They belong to the Asclepiadaceae family, which includes over 200 species native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Australia, and Polynesia.

Hoya plants are known for their distinctive leaves, which are thick (sometimes thin and everything in between), fleshy, and often waxy in texture. The leaves vary in shape and size depending on the species, ranging from heart-shaped to oval or lanceolate. The foliage can be glossy or velvety, with colors ranging from deep green to variegated patterns of green, white, or cream. Some species have leaves with interesting patterns, such as silver flaecks or prominent veins.

One of the most captivating features of Hoya plants is their flowers. The blooms are usually star-shaped and come in clusters called umbels. Each umbel can contain numerous individual flowers. The flowers are typically waxy in texture, hence the common name "wax plant." The colors of the flowers vary widely among different species and can include shades of pink, white, yellow, red, or purple. The blossoms often have a sweet fragrance that intensifies during the evening or night, attracting moths and other pollinators.

Hoya plants are favored by many indoor gardeners due to their relatively low maintenance requirements. They thrive in bright, indirect light, but they can tolerate some shade. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it may scorch the leaves. Hoya plants prefer warm temperatures between 15°C to 27°C, and they are not frost-tolerant.

When it comes to watering, Hoya plants prefer a slightly dry soil. They are sometimes called "tropical succulents", so it's important not to overwater them. Allow the top about 2.5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings, and then water thoroughly, ensuring the excess water drains away. During the winter months, when the growth slows down, reduce the frequency of watering.

Hoya plants are epiphytic in nature, which means they grow on other plants or objects in their natural habitat. Therefore, they appreciate well-draining soil that mimics their natural environment.

For indoors, we prefer Terra Pon, or regular Pon when using a self watering pot.

Hoya plants can also be grown in hanging baskets, allowing their long trailing stems to cascade over the edges. Alternatively, they can be trained on trellises or allowed to climb with the help of supports. Regular pruning can help control the size and shape of the plant.
